Logo design files: what to ask for before your project ends

A useful logo handover includes more than one picture. Ask for a scalable version, everyday image exports, light and dark variations, and a clear explanation of which files you can edit. Agree the exact deliverables before commissioning the work.

Which logo file should I use?

A transparent PNG is convenient for presentations, profile pictures and everyday layouts. It has a fixed resolution, so an image made for a small avatar may look soft on a large sign. A JPEG works for a solid background but does not preserve transparency.

A properly constructed vector file describes shapes instead of a fixed grid of pixels. It is useful when a logo must move from a business card to larger artwork. An SVG or PDF can contain vector artwork, but the extension alone does not prove that the contents are vector: a photograph placed inside a PDF remains a photograph.

Agree a practical handover list

  • Primary logo and any agreed compact or horizontal variation.
  • Full-colour, single-colour and reversed versions for different backgrounds.
  • Transparent image exports at sizes suited to your actual channels.
  • The agreed vector or editable source format, where included in the package.
  • Colour references, font names and a short usage note.

Source files are not automatically the same as exported files. Tell the designer which software you can use. If you need an editable Canva layout, say so before the design starts; a Canva template and an original vector master serve different purposes.

Test the logo where customers will see it

Make a small test sheet with a profile avatar, invoice header, business card and plain black-and-white version. Check whether fine strokes vanish, the business name is readable and the symbol still works at a small size. A beautiful full-screen presentation can hide these everyday problems.

For example, a long business name may need a compact symbol for a social avatar and a wider lockup for a letterhead. This is a layout requirement worth discussing early, rather than treating every variation as an unexpected revision.

What should I send for a logo design quote?

Send the exact business name, a short description of your offer, your intended audience, where the logo will appear and a few references with comments. Explain what you like about a reference—its simplicity, lettering or colour—without asking for someone else's mark to be copied.

Confirm the number of initial concepts, revision rounds and final files. Also agree usage rights and any third-party font or asset licences. Keep a copy of the written scope with your final delivery.

Can a logo alone make my branding consistent?

It provides a starting point. Consistency also needs repeatable colours, typography and layouts. Read the startup branding checklist if you need stationery and social assets as well.

Moiz Creator's logo design service lists the starting scope and regional prices. Share your intended uses on WhatsApp so the quote can include the right formats instead of a folder full of files you cannot use.
